How to Take the Stress Out of Moving

by Monica Black on March 25, 2013

seniors moving and packing boxesYou have lived in the same home for the past 30 or more years. The home has become more of a burden and you have decided to downsize. Where do you start? Change is not easy and you are beginning to feel overwhelmed and anxious about the decision to move. You ask yourself, how could you have accumulated so much and how can you decide on what to take to a smaller home, whether it be an apartment, condominium or senior residence?

A helping hand please

You may want to consider bringing in a professional to help you.  A senior transition company will take care of all your needs; packing, moving, staging, getting your existing home ready  for sale, and later unpacking. Before hiring a professional, do your research and ask for references; are they are bonded, do they subcontract their work and most importantly do they understand what is important to you as you go through this change?

Where to even begin?

The things that you treasure took years to accumulate, and the process of streamlining your life will take time.  Knowing where to start is often the hardest part.  Whether you hire a transition company, or not, you should give yourself at least 3 to 5 months to prepare. Planning and setting deadlines is the key to a stress free move.

Some other helpful hints

  • Throw a family party, have fun and take lots of pictures – start the downsizing conversation.
  • Walk through your home and take stock of everything – make a list of all the items you love and can’t live without; remember you can’t keep everything.
  • Start in a room that is seldom used.  As you go through your belongings think about the last time you used it. Has it been a year or more? Most importantly ask yourself “Will I need it in my new home and will there be a place for it?”
  • Make a list of items that you wish to give to your family and friends – arrange for how you will get the items to them.
  • If you are planning to sell furniture and household items, you should contact a few content sales companies to get the best value.
  • Budget for moving expenses and start collecting estimates and create a “moving file” Draw out a floor plan of your new home and start deciding where the furniture you are keeping will go – this will ensure you don’t take more than you will need.
  • Do a little at a time, pace yourself – working for one to two hours with regular breaks will make it all seem less daunting.
  • Have fun.

Everyone hates moving

Lets face it moving at any stage of our lives can be stressful and overwhelming. Whether you hire a senior transition company to assist you or decide to do it yourself with the help of family and friends plan ahead, set deadlines and follow the strategies above.
